Hi everyone! This is Nic and Kalia and we are both 3rd year vet students in Edinburgh. Last week, we had the opportunity to stay at the Ballakelly farm for 5 days to gain pig husbandry experience…but we got to do so much more than that. We herded sheep alongside Alan, Miles, and the resident sheepdogs, groomed and played with the horses, helped with some cow procedures, and were shown the entire process of pork production from piglet to meat. To top it off, we had almost an entire week of great weather and the sunshine during our visit which was a welcomed treat.
We would also like to say a big thank you to a variety of folk from the island for giving us such a warm welcome and allowing us to gain unique practical experience for our studies. This includes Phil and the employees at Isle of Man Meats who toured us around the facilities and explained the processes and economics of meat production.
We learned a lot from our time at Ballakelly. Thanks Rachel and Alan for welcoming us into your family and home!
